PROCESS

Common Development Phases

01

Goal Definition

A successful definition creates clear guidelines for future development and enables a more accurate workload estimate.

During definition, we determine Power BI reporting goals, target audiences and data sources. Our aim is to form a comprehensive understanding of the client's business so we can actively offer the best solutions to support data-driven decision making. This phase emphasizes strong communication and proactivity from both the developer and the client.

02

Data Extraction and Cleaning

Once both the client and we have a clear picture of what we're building, data is needed.

Data is extracted from files and data warehouses and possibly cleaned into a better format. We use best practices to keep the upcoming data model lightweight and as fast as possible. If there are many data sources, development can be phased so that only the most critical data is imported first, and the report is enriched with more data later.

03

Data Model & Calculations

The data model is a fairly invisible part of Power BI reporting, but we consider it the most important phase.

A good data model enables the report's speed, agility and future modifiability. Multiple data sources are combined into the data model, designed to work together in the best possible way. The model is also enriched with measures and calculated columns — this is where Power BI's superiority over other BI tools lies.

04

Report Creation & Visualization

Once the data model is ready, data can be visualized in an understandable format.

Using the definition, we create appropriate tabs for the report. Reports typically contain filter panels, tables, KPI metrics and visuals. Iterative development together with the client ensures the end result provides the most added value.

05

Publishing and Training

The finished report is published to Power BI Service for the target audience and set to refresh at specific intervals.

With the most common license version (Power BI Pro) there are max. 8 refresh times per day. It is also highly recommended to arrange a session where the new report is reviewed with users. We also provide comprehensive training on using Power BI reports.

06

Development and Maintenance

Needs, Power BI, databases and everything around us is constantly evolving.

After the first release, it's important to maintain reporting development because data-driven decision making is about continuous questioning and exploration.
